New York Approves 52 conditional cannabis cultivation licenses

New York has handed out its first 52 conditional cannabis cultivation licenses to hemp farmers across the state. These farms will have a head start in cultivating the first round of recreational cannabis that will be on store shelves when doors open potentially at the end of this year.

Giving out these conditional licenses was time sensitive in that the farmers can only grow cannabis outdoors one season of the year. With spring planting coming in May, it was imperative to get hemp farmers licensed so they could get plants in the ground in time for a successful fall harvest.

Farmers will be limited to just one acre of flowering plants outdoors, and just over half an acre of greenhouse cultivation.

Gov. Kathy Hochul has said the so-called conditional cultivation licenses will help “jump-start” what’s expected to become one of the nation's largest legal marijuana markets. New York legalized recreational use of marijuana for adults a year ago, but retail sales are still months off.

The state created a program earlier this year that gave business license priority to applicants that were affected by marijuana-related convictions in the past. With this new program, state officials believe retail sales could begin by the end of this year.
