600 New York Localities Prohibit Legal Cannabis
Around 600 localities across the state have said no to cannabis sales within their communities, state data showed this week.
Around a third of municipalities and 10% of cities adopted a law saying their jurisdiction wouldn't allow retail marijuana dispensaries or cannabis consumption lounges, the Office of Cannabis Management said Tuesday.
The Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act, the state's cannabis law that was enacted in March, gave cities, towns, and villages the ability to withdraw from the two licenses.
But they could only do so before Dec. 31, and they could not opt-out of other types of licenses such as those for cultivation or delivery. Counties were not given the option to reject the two licenses.
Municipalities without the licenses would lose out on tax revenue. However, they could later reverse course and later say yes to dispensaries and consumption lounges.
